  • DIRECTIONS

  • Q: Where and when do we meet?
A: The chess club meets on Thursday night at the Wilkes County Public Library; between 5:00 and 7:30 pm in the Genealogy room.  Exceptions, major holidays that fall on Thursdays.

Q: Do I have to be there at precisely 5:00 pm every Thursday?
A: No, we understand that everyone’s schedule is different, (work, vacations, etc.). We are only letting you know when you can expect other club members to be there.

Q: Do I have to leave at 7:30 pm?
A: No, not every game will finish by 7:30.  However, and I emphasize; if your game is not concluded by 7:45 pm you must either stop or adjourn the game at that time.  No exceptions.

Q: Are there any dues to join?
A: No.  There are no dues to become a member of the Wilkes County Chess Club.

Q: Do I have to have my own chess set?
A: No.  Most of the time there are several members who have brought their own, so there are usually plenty of them to go around.

    Q: Can I become a rated player?
A: Yes.  I should mention first that it is not a requirement to be rated to play chess in the club.  But if you choose to become a rated player there are a couple of conditions which must be met and there are members of the club who will help you.  If you would like to find tournaments in our area click HERE

Q: Do I have to know how to play chess to become a member?
A: No.  We have players at all skill levels in the club. It is the club’s intent to provide a friendly and inviting environment to promote the game of chess to beginners as well as established players.

  • Etiquette: Cell phones should be turned off at the club and you should go outside if you need to talk on your cell phone. Never disturb or offer assistance or commentary to players invoved in a game. Remember that this is a library as well as a chess club, talk in a quiet tone. This club is open to all ages, please refrain from any profanity while at the club.  It is common for games to begin and end in a handshake. Offering your opponent a handshake in a lost position is a courteous way to resign the game.
